NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, is the leading organization for developers, owners and related professionals in office, industrial and mixed-use real estate. NAIOP provides unparalleled industry networking and education, and advocates for effective legislation on behalf of our members. NAIOP advances responsible, sustainable development that creates jobs and benefits the communities in which our members work and live.

The national association was formed in 1967 as NAIP (National Association of Industrial Parks, as a small group of owners and developers of industrial parks in the eastern United States. The purpose was to create a forum for the open exchange of information on development. They also had a need for standardized covenants and restrictions, building requirements, and beneficial legislation and taxation.

Reflecting the change in membership, NAIP became NAIOP (National Association for Industrial and Office Parks) in 1976. In 2009 NAIOP dropped the words behind its acronym, which no longer reflected its current membership composition. Over the years, NAIOP has attracted members who are committed to excellence, entrepreneurial in spirit, and want to reach new heights in building excellence.

In 1987, Bill Byrd became the first president of NAIOP Houston. At the time, it was thought that NAIOP would create a sense of camaraderie among brokers and developers, helping lift their spirits in light of the real estate depression the city was experiencing. With little capital to invest, NAIOP’s national chapter contributed a rather substantial loan. To start the chapter off right and eliminate the debt, the founders proposed a “Fight Night” fundraiser. The event posed considerable risk and required large investments from several small companies, but thankfully a special appearance by George Foreman and a hard fought boxing match helped the chapter completely pay off their loan to the National Association. This set the precedence for the future of NAIOP Houston, an organization that even in the toughest of times, continues to flourish. Today, NAIOP Houston is the foremost real estate association for real estate professionals.
